Danielle de Niese's daily wardrobe choices make headlines in the New York Times...Wait, what?

By art life and stilettos · January 30, 2012 · 3 Comments ·

Yes, I love fashion. Yes, I love opera, but when the New York Times decided to do an introspective feature on what Danielle de Niese wore for an entire week, my heart sank a bit. I would have loved to read a journal about her experience performing in Enchanted Island at the Met, what went on at Domingo's birthday party, and who she's studying with in New York rather than some dull nonesense about tucking her jeans into her boots and wearing - le shock! - gym clothes to the gym. This article really missed the mark and failed to include photos of her sartorial journal, which would have at least made the article worthwhile. Of course, I still read it and have reposted after the jump for your viewing pleasure.

Soundstreams Encore launch party at Atelier Rosemarie Umetsu

Rosemarie Umetsu and Diana Di Mauro - Photo by Enzo Di Mauro

There are few things I love more than music and fashion, as you may have guessed, so when the fabulously talented and classical music loving designer Rosemarie Umetsu got ahold of me to cover both the reopening of her Atelier on Davenport Road and the launch of Soundstreams Encore, who was I to refuse? I took a video of the evening that features an interview with Rosemarie about her fashion designs, an interview with Soundstreams Founder and Artistic Director Lawrence Cherney about his work and music in Toronto, and a bunch of info about Encore. I think it's a fun initiative that will help draw younger audiences to more creative musical programming. Percussionist Ryan Scott did a very unique demonstration and had a special surprise for all the guests. A surprise that had me giggling with delight, that's for sure.

A Muse Ball - Operanation 8 - with behind the scenes photos

By art life and stilettos · October 20, 2011 · 0 Comments ·

Operanation 8: A Muse Ball is happening Friday, October 21, 2011. This year the Canadian Opera Company Ensemble Studio fundraiser has chosen "the Muse" as it's theme, and has created a teaser website called The Daily Muse which features notable designers, industry insiders, film and media notables, and members of the Canadian Opera Company talking about their Muses and personal inspiration. Operanation will showcase Canadian fashion designs and custom made garments from Calla (by Calla Haynes), Joeffer Caoc, Greta Constantine (by Kirk Pickersgill and Stephen Wong), Arthur Mendonça and Ashley Rowe. These designers have created garments that reflect the personal muses of the design house, presented in the form of a fashion installation curated by RAC Boutique, with shoes provided by Holt Renfrew.

Now that fashion has been covered, let's get to the music. Rufus Wainwright will be headlining the evening and there will be a special performance by Austra in collaboration with soprano Ambur Braid and baritone Adrian Kramer, two rising opera stars from the COC’s Ensemble Studio. I love the mix of popular and opera.

Tickets to this magical night of dancing, rousing live entertainment and specialty food and drink are $150 per person, and are on sale at operanation.ca or by calling COC Ticket Services at 416-363-8231.

Cecily Carver, the Social Media Guru at the COC has posted a series of behind the scenes photos from the poster shoot on the COC blog. Check out my gallery below for a selection of those photos. Cecily's original post can be seen on the Parlando blog.

Talk Back: DKNY Spring 2011 Goes Live

By art life and stilettos · January 24, 2011 · 0 Comments ·

photo c/o DKNY Donna Karan New York

What could be better than cozying up on the couch on a cold January evening to watch and chat about the chic, DKNY Spring 2011 fashion show? Ok, maybe watching Dmitri Hvorostovsky bring down the house as Simon Boccanegra at The Metropolitan Opera, but since I don't live in NYC spending the evening interacting with DKNY is definitely the next best thing.

Jean Paul Gaultier debuts La Perla Lingerie with New York City Opera

By art life and stilettos · December 6, 2010 · 0 Comments ·

The enfant terrible of French fashion is back in old form, mixing music with ultra glamorous lingerie. Jean Paul Gaultier, the iconic designer who collaborated with Madonna on her Blond Ambition and Confessions tours, and who designed the the cone-bra, which is the most distinctive piece of lingerie ever, has once again taken to the boudoir, this time collaborating with ultra luxurious lingerie boutique La Perla on some very enticing designs. If you peek through the gallery below you will find undergarments that glamorously pad hips, and shoulders, and oh yes my friends you will find some wearable cones alongside delicate lace and unique embroidery.

Now for the music, Jean Paul Gaultier and La Perla are launching the collection tomorrow night in collaboration with New York City Opera.

Shop For Opera is a shopping event for young opera patrons that will be an indulgent soiree full of wine, chocolate, women in fine lingerie and performances by New York City Opera artists.

What a fabulous event. If I lived in New York I would undoubtably be in attendance.  If you do live in NYC (lucky you) here is a link to the invitation, which also gives you a 20% discount on your most wanted items. I have my eye on the shoulder-pad bra.

I hope to get my hands on some photos from the event, and when I do, you'll be the first to know.

Naples, Jazz and The Tailored Suit

By art life and stilettos · November 30, 2010 · 0 Comments ·

Here is a preview of what looks to be a very interesting documentary on the craft of men's suit tailoring. The doc looks at a group of tailors in Naples, Italy who still hand stitch each custom suit for their customers. This is one of the remaining instances of skilled sewing and design taking place in Italy by Italians, since some high end designers have traded their local atelier for off-shore production, while others have instead opted to employ illegal immigrants in Italy, for the sake of the "Made in Italy" label.  I still love me some designer goods though...

The music is fabulous, as is the cinematography. Directed by Gianluca Migliarotti of Kid Dandy.

Valentino for Gap

By art life and stilettos · November 22, 2010 · 0 Comments ·

Milan, the city best know for La Scala, Giuseppe Verdi, and Alta Moda is embracing American casual, but with a twist, of course.  Milan is opening their very first Gap store this month on Corso Vittorio Emmanuele, and is celebrating with a high profile, seven piece design collaboration with Valentino. Check out the gallery for a preview of the collection.  Oh, did I mention the Valentino for Gap collection will NOT be available in Canada? Of course not. C'est la vie.

Warning: These Tights Are Not Pants

By art life and stilettos · February 12, 2010 · 0 Comments ·

I cannot stand it when girls wear tights as pants. It's just wrong. I'm OK with Skinny Jeans, Cigarette Pants, and even Riding Pants but there is a clear distinction between pants and tights.

There is an online manifesto devoted to riding this strange, strange trend.  Check out the Tights Are Not Pants website, their manifesto might make you laugh, plus you can download and print your very own Tights Are Not Pants stickers.

Please not that I have nothing against dancers in tights, underwear or big butts.

Sienna "Forgot My Tutu" Miller

Lindsey "Underwear on Top" Lohan

Paris "I See France" Hilton

OK...I Forgive Paris. I don't think she meant to wear her tights as pants. Then again...whatev.

Miss Dirty Martini Poses for Karl Lagerfeld at Chanel

By art life and stilettos · January 15, 2010 · 0 Comments ·

Karl Lagerfeld is behind the lens yet again, this time he's shooting Burlesque Dancer Miss Dirty Martini for V Magazine's Size Issue. I wonder what Coco would say if she was alive today.

“An iconoclast meets the icon of class.” –Karl Lagerfeld

“Posing on the double C’s, modeling like my life depended on it, I thought, Why not? Why can’t designers make fashion that mimics the architecture of hips and busts and then choose models that wear it perfectly?” –Miss Dirty Martini

Rachel McAdams Poses for Vogue, Writes Her Own Notebook

By art life and stilettos · December 15, 2009 · 0 Comments ·

Probably one of the most down to earth celebrities in Hollywood, local actress Rachel McAdams talks to Sally Singer in the January issue of Vogue about her private life. Some highlights of her day include practicing Kundalini Yoga at four-thirty in the morning, taking part in a knife-skills class at Good Egg in Kensington Market, and riding her bike around Toronto.

Rachel McAdams, the dazzling Canadian star of Sherlock Holmes, gives Sally Singer a peek into her very private life.
