Photos from the Franz Liszt Museum, Bayreuth

By art life and stilettos · October 27, 2011 · 0 Comments ·

To further celebrate the birthday of Franz Liszt, I thought I'd share some of the photos I took during my visit to his home, which has been converted into a small museum in Bayreuth, Germany. You can press play below to watch the slideshow, or follow this link to see the gallery with captions.

There was no flash photography allowed in the  museum, so please disregard the poor quality of some of the images.

Nuit Blanche 2011: Bubbles, Balloons and Burlesque

By art life and stilettos · October 7, 2011 · 0 Comments ·

Photos by Diana Di Mauro

Last weekend was Nuit Blanche, and I wanted to share some of the amazing, interesting and provocative art that I saw. I pretty much stayed on Queen St. West. The best art I saw was the giant balloon Ring Leader who watched over the entrance of the Drake Hotel, and the Clowns and Burlesque dancers entertaining guests at the Gladstone Hotel. Here's my first photostream for your entertainment!

Welcome back to Art Life and Stilettos, Season 2!

By art life and stilettos · September 22, 2011 · 0 Comments ·

Welcome back friends, I am officially back in Toronto and excited as ever to have Art Life and Stilettos back up and running after an, admittedly long, summer hiatus. To fill you in, I spent much of this summer away from Toronto. My summer began with a short trip to Los Angeles, then led me across the ocean to Europe, where I spent five weeks in the gorgeous Italian island of Sicily. In July, I had the great opportunity to spend a month in the Munich, Germany. The weather was cool but the opera was hot. The Bayerische Staatsoper was in swing with their popular Munich Opera Festival, where I had the opportunity to see Mozart's Die Entführung aus dem Serail, Conducted by Johannes Debus, with Jennifer O'Loughlin as Konstanze and Pavol Breslik as Belmonte; Don Giovanni with Gerald Finley as the Drunken, swinging Don and Alex Esposito as a hilarious Leporello. Veronique Gens, and Erin Wall rounded out the cast; Strauss' Ariadne auf Naxos, conducted by Kent Nagano and production by Robert Carsen, with outstanding performance by Daniela Sindram as the heartbroken Komponist, and Daniela Fally as a smoking Zerbinetta; Maurice Ravel's L'Enfant et les sortilèges with Alexander Zemlinsky's Der Zwerg, conducted by Kent Nagano and featuring Camilla Tilling as Die Prinzessin and Donna Clara, and Paul Gay as Der Sessel / Ein Baum and Don Estoban.

Besides hearing great opera, I spent my month pursuing my own operatic training, working on my technique, coaching with top professionals and attending acting workshops. It was a fabulous month for my vocal growth, that is for sure.

The cherry on the sundae after a musical month in Munich was a stunning Liederabend recital with pianist Helmut Deutsch, featuring works by Strauss and Liszt.

After saying goodbye to Munich, I went back to the south of Italy for some well needed beach time. Munich is beautiful but alas the cool, rainy weather left something to be desired. From la bella Italia, I'm back in Toronto.

I have a lot on the go with training, and graduate school but now that I'm back in the swing of things I am very excited to get Art Life and Stilettos back on her feet again. Just as the seasons change for opera companies and in fashion, this season Art Life and Stilettos will have a bit of a make-over too. Stay tuned for updates.

Tonight, I'm off to see opening night of the Canadian Opera Company's new season. Gluck's Iphigenia in Tauris is slated to open the house and will feature the ever lovely Susan Graham as Iphigenia.

Ciao Toronto, Hello Hollywood

By art life and stilettos · May 19, 2011 · 0 Comments ·

As the opera season winds down in Toronto, it seems appropriate for Art LIfe and Stilettos to go on a well deserved vacation. I'm flying out to Hollywood this afternoon and will be heading to Munich, Germany during the month of July. I hope to fill you in on the summer festival scene as best I can from there. Unitl then, have a wonderful summer. I'll check in with you again soon enough.

Your Election Toolkit - Focus on the Arts

By art life and stilettos · April 25, 2011 · 4 Comments ·

It is lead up week to the Federal Election in Canada on May 2 and as usual the arts in Canada remain a largely neglected subject. It is amazing how difficult it can be to find out any information about each candidate's vision for the arts. That is why I am so grateful for the thoughtful people at Opera.ca who put together a very special advocacy edition of their monthly newsletter High Notes.

Their Federal Election Toolkit is full of resources that include links to party platforms, a social media primer and a guide to the questions we should be asking our candidates. You would usually require a membership to access Opera.ca and receive their mailings, but as they have encouraged the widespread circulation of their resources you can access them all here for free.

Art Life and Stilettos is back home after getting her kicks on Route 66

By art life and stilettos · April 19, 2011 · 0 Comments ·

After weeks of exploring America, Art Life and Stilettos is finally back home. I spent the good part of two weeks on the great American road trip: driving across America on Route 66, and trust me the song doesn't do it justice.

I started out in my hometown of Toronto, then drove straight to Chicago where I spent two nights. After that it was 66 all the way to Los Angeles, California. On the way I saw many interesting and odd sights, and visited many friendly and unique towns. From Joliet, Illinois to St. Louis, Missouri; Springfield; Stanton; Bourbon; Rolla;  Baxter Springs, Kansas; Vinita, Oklahoma; Oklahoma City; Elk City; Texola; Amarillo, Texas; Santa Rosa, New Mexico; Santa Fe; Albuquerque; Pertified Forest, Arizona; Flagstaff; The Grand Canyon; Seligman, Arizona; Oatman; Barstow, California; and finally through Los Angeles all the way to the Santa Monica Pier.

There were so many other towns we visited, there is just no way I can mention all of them. Let me tell you that the trip was amazing, lots of fun, relaxing and gave me a true taste of real American Car Culture. I will never forget my time driving through the mid and south-west and hope beyond hopes that I have the opportunity to do it again. I highly reccomend the drive for anyone itching to do a road trip. Oh, and LA? I envy your weather more than you will ever understand. Yesterday in Toronto IT SNOWED!! Take me back to Paridise City, please...

Seeing as I can't show you every picture from my trip, I'll start with a few highlights from Chicago. I hope to keep sharing interesting photos with you in future posts.

Chicago:

I wanted to attend the Lyric Opera of Chicago production of Handel's Hercules, featuring Eric Owens, Alice Coote, David Daniels, Lucy Crowe and Richard Croft, but alas I could not locate any tickets. Instead I attended a wonderful concert by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. The evening featured three perfect Saturday night pieces: Berlioz Roman Carnival Overture, Penderecki Concerto grosso for Three Cellos and Orchestra, and the beautiful Elgar Enigma Variations. The concert was conducted by Charles Dutoit (not Muti) and featured cellists John Sharp, Kenneth Olsen and Katinka Kleijn. The evening was superb.

I snapped a few photos after the concert:

Get well soon, Maestro.

After highbrow symphony we hit up some dirty blues at Kingston Mines. This is where I tried Rib Tips for the first time. Sometimes I wish I asked what a dish actually consists of before ordering it, even if it is a Chicago specialty. Anyone else try Rib Tips? What do you think?

Here's a picture of B.L.U.E.S. right across the street in Blues Alley:

Love you Chicago, can't wait to return.

Sorry I haven't been able to update you on my journey across America, but don't worry Art Life and Stilettos will be back in April. I hope this picture of the Petrified Forest in Arizona tides you over until then. I was there yesterday and it was breathtaking.

A pick me up for Riccardo Muti

By art life and stilettos · February 13, 2011 · 0 Comments ·

I'm wishing Maestro Riccardo Muti all the best as he recovers from his recent surgeries due to a fall caused by fainting while at the podium during a rehearsal with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra on February 3, and the consequent implantation of a pacemaker. Apparently he's recovering well, and I'm hopeful he will be able to swiftly return to what he does best.

In lighter news, Maestro Muti and the CSO have won awards for Best Classical Album of the Year, and Best Choral Performance at the Grammys for their recording of Verdi Requiem.

Verdi Requiem: Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Chorus, Riccardo Muti, conductor, Barbara Frittoli, soprano, Olga Borodina, mezzo-soprano, Mario Zeffiri, tenor, Ildar Abdrazakov, bass, Orchestra Hall, Chicago, 17.1.2009 (BJ)

Off I go with Maria Malibran

By art life and stilettos · January 6, 2011 · 1 Comment ·

Happy 2011 everyone!

Art Life and Stilettos will be travelling somewhere very warm to give a talk on Maria Malibran.  I would love to take you with me, but airline weight restrictions prevent me from hiding people in my luggage. Sorry. As compensation, I would like to treat you to a bit of my presentation after the jump.

Enjoy the above clip of Cecilia Bartoli performing the piece "Rataplan," composed by Maria Malibran.

Have a wonderful holiday!

By art life and stilettos · December 24, 2010 · 3 Comments ·

Hello everyone,

Since the holidays are here I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for reading Art Life and Stilettos, and for making the arts, especially opera, a part of your daily life.

Please watch the attached clip, which I'm sure will help to get you in the festive mood. It is Luciano Pavarotti and Placido Domingo singing O Holy Night, and it is stunning, of course.

Con affetto,

The Simpsons Turn Twenty-Three. Let's celebrate!

By art life and stilettos · November 11, 2010 · 1 Comment ·

The Simpsons fans, have no fear. Your favourite cartoon family has been renewed for its 23rd season. That means that by the end of next season The Simpsons will have produced 515 episodes.

As always, many high profile guest voices will be joining in this season, including Halle Berry, Katy Perry, Ricky Gervais, and Jon Hamm.

I’d like to see another Sideshow Bob opera, I absolutely loved Italian Bob.  Above is a clip of Krusty the Clown as Pagliaccio, singing his version of Vesti la giubba from the opera I Pagliacci.

A Pause for the Culturati

Nadja Auermann as Carmen for 2008/09 Deutsche Oper Berlin ad campaign.

To those who read my blog, and to those who don't, you will have noticed that I have been MIA for a few months now.  I needed a break to focus on school and really think about what I want to say with this blog.  The focus will change a bit...or actually, what I mean to say is that the blog will gain focus.  My first love is opera, my second is singing, and my third is everything else. From now on the blog will focus more on the first two items.  You may like that, you may not. Be my guest to stay or to go.

I will say that for me there is nothing sexier, more imaginative, more debatable, or fantastic than opera.

con affetto,

xoxo

Italy's Bloody Sweet Reality

By art life and stilettos · January 9, 2010 · 0 Comments ·

"After 10 years of Berlusconi as a PM, thanks to the impressive media power at his disposal, Italians are now living in his imagined world. It's a world without respect for women, legality or financial accountability; which values only individual success, money. It sees the image as more important than the word."

Giulio D'Eramo, Index on Censorship website, in response to the Government "pushing for a bill that would restrict internet freedom by making it compulsory, even for blogs, to get a government permission before posting political comment on the web."

Globe and Mail's Elizabeth Renzetti explains why the celluloid vision of Italy glamorized in the film NINE (clip above) is a far call from the Italy many Italians know today. Matteo Garrone's gritty docu-drama Gomorrah (clip below) shows the harsh reality that undermines the culture in Naples and Caserta, two cities in the region of Campania.

As an Italian it is hard to look at the depth of corruption, but it remains a quiet reality regardless. Please know that as a southerner I have never seen first-hand the violence or grit documented in Gomorrah, nor do I necessarily agree with everything Renzetti articulates, but I am aware of the corrupt underbelly that continually breaks the country down from the inside.

Click the link at the bottom of this post to view Renzetti's complete article.
