Streaming Now: National Theatre presents “This House”

Since quarantine began, London’s National Theatre has been streaming some of their top productions for free on YouTube. Every week there is a new offer, and this week, couch-bound audiences are being served with a modern take on British Politics in the 1970’s.

Written by James Graham, This House captures the daily workings of Labour’s 1970s political struggles, while raising questions about the current parliamentary system.

The play earned a 5 star review from The Guardian’s Michael Billington when it played in 2016. The story revolves around the Labour and Tory whips, which immediately beings the early seasons of the highly corrupt Majority whip in House of Cards to mind. “There is grotesque comedy about the sight of the sick and dying, along with young mothers, being rushed in to vote so that the whips’ office turns into “an A&E-cum-daycare centre”. Time-honoured conventions about the “pairing” of absentee members are shattered when backstairs relations between the rival parties break down.”

This House is free to watch on youtube, and available until 7pm UK time on June 4, 2020.
